My name is Jordan Wieben and I am costume designer and illustrator working out of Calgary, Alberta.
My parents thought I was going to be a pilot. I come from a lineage of pilots spanning three generations back to the earliest days of flight. Of the few remaining outfits from my time as a child is a miniature flight suit… Instead, and largely to due to such frequent exposure to airplanes at an early age, I grew up keen to avoid flying whenever possible.
What I have in place of a pilot’s license is a strong sense of lineage and history, which lead me first to being an museum archivist, and then to studying costume design at the National Theatre School of Canada.
I am inspired by the intricate pen and ink artwork of artists like Heinrich Kley, Beatrix Potter, and E.H. Shepard. Using a combination of dip pens, India ink, and gouache I am able to balance precise storytelling with expressive mark making.
